The following are the steps of this application you must follow
1. Confirm your eligibility
All international students must meet English language requirements to be eligible for entry into a research program. Note that eligibility for entry into a research degree does not guarantee that you will be offered a place, or that you will be offered a scholarship.
Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)
Admission requires applicants to hold or be eligible to hold:
- An Honours degree or a Bachelor degree with Honours of at least class 2a standard in an appropriate discipline
Or
- An appropriate Masters degree
Or
- Satisfy the Dean of Research that their previous education, relevant professional experience and published research work is of sufficient quality and relevance to prepare the applicant for a research degree
Masters by Research
Admission requires applicants to hold or be eligible to hold:
- An Honours degree or a Bachelor degree with honours
Or
- A relevant Bachelor degree (or equivalent) of at least 3 years with a minimum credit average
Or
- An appropriate Masters degree
Or
- Satisfy the Dean of Research that their previous education, relevant professional experience and published research work is of sufficient quality and relevance to prepare the applicant for a research degree
Doctor of Philosophy (by Portfolio of Publications)
Full admission criteria are available here. Generally applicants for this degree should have produced research of international standing in their respective fields on the basis of their ongoing record of academic publication, and should not already hold a PhD.
Professional Doctorate by Research
Full admission criteria are available here. Generally applicants for this degree should meet the requirements for entry to a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD), and normally show that they have at least 5 years experience of practice in their relevant field, normally within the last 10 years.
2. Match your research area

3. Find a supervisor
A supervisor is an academic staff member from the University of South Australia who will work with you throughout your research degree.
It is preferable that you nominate a supervisor when completing your application, although you can submit your application without doing so.
4. Find a scholarship
In your online application, you will need to identify the scholarship you wish to apply for.

5. Organize referee reports
They require at least one academic or professional referee report before they can assess your application. If you are applying for a competitive scholarship, it is strongly recommended that you obtain two referee reports to maximize your competitiveness. The report must be sent by your referee to the University by email.
6. Mandatory documentation
- University academic mark sheet or transcript including details of courses/subjects undertaken and grades achieved. If your original transcript is not in English you must upload both the original and an official certified English language translation.
- University grading scale (often contained on the back page of your transcript, e.g. A = 85% to 100%).
- University diploma supplement (if applicable).
- Parchment/academic credential as evidence of conferral or completion date of your degree - this might be printed on your transcript.
- All the documents from each qualification should be combined into a single file that you can upload to your application. There is no requirement to send certified copies or original documents when applying.
7. Apply online
The first section of the application asks for your registration details to set up your Apply Online account. Once you submit this information you will be emailed your login details and a link to activate your application. Please note that the activation link is valid for 7 days. After you activate your application, you will be able to login to edit and complete your application in multiple sessions.
When you submit the completed application you will be asked to declare that all information that you have supplied is accurate.
